What is alternative dispute resolution?

Alternative dispute resolution is the opportunity available to all consumers to turn to official entities that can assist them in resolving or guiding a conflict before initiating litigation in Court. As a general rule, the procedure is as follows: the customer asks an impartial third party to act as an intermediary between themselves and the merchant who is the subject of the complaint. The intermediary may suggest a solution to your complaint, impose a solution on both parties, or bring the parties together to reach an agreement.

You may recognize alternative dispute resolution by other names: 'mediation', 'conciliation', 'arbitration', or 'consumer dispute resolution committee'. Alternative dispute resolution is typically less expensive, less formal, and faster than going to court.
